What can I say :)

I found this Mid Century Lane Desk today.

For $20.00. And he threw this in.

For Free.
Yeah, I know. It was a very good day, which included some other equally amazing finds.

But back to the desk, it's a little beat up so I am going to attempt my first restoration job. If you've got any tips let me know. I'll be sure to post pictures of the after - I think this desk should clean up to something pretty spectacular.

And here's a big favor, if you know which line this desk is part of please share. I have gone down the rabbit hole of the internet searching for this bad boy - trying to get a glimpse of what the desk might look like when it's supposed to look like what it looks like. Based on the serial number I know it's from 1958. That's all I got.

Do you have a catalog from 1958? A matching piece? I would love any suggestions of where else to look. I'll be back soon with some of my favorite finds of the weekend, and hopefully some excellent after pic.

Happy Hunting!
Below are the items I brought home this week.
I love this Dansk salt shaker and pepper mill. I also brought home another larger somewhat matchy Dansk pepper mill that were planning on keeping to replace one that isn't so pretty.

Salvation Army:
$2.50 for a children's book!?
$3.99 for a small milk glass bud vase!?
$24.99 for 1 brass horse head bookend!?

AmVets:
Why must you use black sharpie to price your items, directly on the items. WHY????

Random mega church thrift store:
Printing out what an items is listed for on Ebay, then offering your item for 25% less does not improve your chances of me purchasing that item.

Random family run thrift store not associated with any charity:
Looking up individual record albums on Ebay as a pricing guide, at the cash register, during check out makes my head actually want to spin off.

In spite of all the above I had some decent finds this week...I'll be back tomorrow to share my loot.

Nells Vintage Househttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02073157347851220520noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-768281232587425429.post-78563029797403379972013-12-08T15:13:00.000-08:002013-12-08T15:23:10.480-08:00What I Found: Dec. 8thHalf of doing well at a pick is timing. This week I had very good timing. Below are just a few of the items I picked up from one sale Friday morning.

Some of the artwork I might be keeping so I'm trying it on for size. Our weather has been cold and rainy most of the weekend so everything is still hanging out in the garage... I tried to style them a little for you, but well for the most part my photos this week are crap and I can't figure out the lighting in the house either. One day.

I don't think this photo captures how very big this abstract oil painting is. Neither me or my husband could fit it in our cars. He ended up walking it home about 1 mile. Thank goodness this sale was in our neighborhood and that they lived at the top of the hill, and us at the bottom. He's a good man.
This is an original serigraph by Victor Vasarely - considered to be the leader of the Op-Art movement. Unfortunately there is a little water damage to the lower right corner which has caused the paper to wave a little. There is also a small puncture in the center of the piece. Im going to guess these 2 flaws destroy any value it once held.

I love the shape of this mid century chair and it's found a nice home for now in the boys room.
Our newest Eames style lounge chair. We've already got a brown one in the living room and a camel colored one you'll see poking out a few photos down. Time to make some decisions and let one or two go.
My vintage luggage hoard continues. Luckily I found this cheerful Steelcase swivel chair so i'll be able to fill a room with all the luggage and spin around to my hearts content. I also picked up that square mid century table holding the luggage. It is teak and much nicer than the above photo implies.
This is where I just got lazy. What I am trying to show you is the beautiful and very long Lane Coffee table full of all the smalls I picked up, including some more pieces of the Midwinter Sun plate set. There are also a few more pieces of art behind the Vasarely that you can't see. Oh and a white feather Christmas tree, but that is already inside by the fireplace.

Oy Vey!

I'm not sure how sale'n around the rest of the country was but the sales were few and far between for us this holiday weekend. Below are a few things I picked up for the Etsy shop.

This 1920's Kodak No. 1 Pocket Camera is in remarkably great condition even more so when you consider this beauty is almost 100 years old. The leather carrying case she came with is a bit worse for the wear, but she did a bang up job of protecting this camera so I'm not so concerned.

Pro Tip: Always grab one of these metal storage containers if you find them. If you're looking, they will be in the garage, usually full of nails, screw and other garage type bobbles. I've had about 5 or so listed in my shop over the last few years and they always sell quickly.

This Dorothy Thorpe lunch plate is the real deal- complete with original foil sticker label. With the success of Mad Men and the obsession created over mid century barware the vintage market is flooded with Dorothy Thorpe "style" plates and glasses. It's tough to firmly identify if you don't know exactly what to look for, mainly that the sterling silver rim should be approx. 1 inch thick. And sterling silver.
I love this 1960s Panasonic Radio. It's clean as a whistle and works great! If it was blue I wouldn't think twice about keeping it.

This wood table lamp is almost as great as the gold metallic shade. The lamp was hand made in the 60s by one of the sons of the lady whose sale we were shopping.

And I won't shy away from picking up vintage luggage either. I guess this means it is time to plan a weekend get-away to palm springs ;)
This chair. THIS CHAIR! The owner was in her 80's and it was hand carved by her grandfather. It is soooooo good. Oh, and it was only $10.00. Yeah, I know!! It's so good, that I will probably devote an entire post to just photos of this chair.
These are the 2 painting I picked up at the SD Vintage Flea Market, where I was also a vendor. I still have piles of art waiting to be hung, but that will never stop me from buying more.
Seriously, if you live in San Diego and you love vintage/mid century/industrial you must go.

I was able to unload so many amazing items I'd been hoarding but weary of listing online because I didn't want to deal with shipping. We more than covered our entry fee, start-up costs (pop-up tent and tables), lunch and had much left over to pick up a few treasures I was eying from my booth. Sadly I have no pictures to show of our booth but feast your eyes on the two paintings I picked up.

It turns out I collect nudes now. This is my 4th nude painting, 6th if you include 2 I've sold in the past.
You'll get a slightly better idea if the size in this picture, it's a statement piece for sure. The frame is separating from the canvas a little along the top which should be an easy enough fix.
And then there is the painting of the rooster. There is a really raunchy pun in here somewhere...but I'll leave that alone for now. I love so much about this rooster. Mainly the bright colors and the thick textured paint.

I can't wait to get these guys hung up. I've found a great place in our living room for the nude. I don't know if its frowned upon to have so much nude (this chic is large and in charge!) greeting visitors as they first enter our home. We've got grandma coming into town this weekend and I'd like to get the place feeling a little more lived in before she arrives.

This weeks post is sort of a cheat. Instead of shopping yard sales, thrifts or estate sales this week I've been shopping my own stock. So much stuff! I've been having fun rediscovering items I found weeks, months...years ago. Seriously, so much stuff.

Various artwork, a bowl given as a housewarming gift years ago and recently rediscovered, assorted milk glass and the lion I found, mentioned here.
This Ikea mirror was hung in our old house and had found its way to the yard sale pile. Luckily we never had that moving/yard sale as it seems to fit nicely in its new home by the front door.

Halloween marks the first big holiday with our guy. Here he is, our little chicken.

We recently discovered the street behind ours closes off for a large Halloween block party. I spoke to a neighbor today who said they are expecting 1500 people. 1500!

I hope you're having a great halloween yourselves. If you need me I'll be trying to figure out how to make 100 pieces of candy stretch to 1500. This could take awhile. Below are a few shots showing the entire space. We've got a 6 month old who just started crawling so this is about as "styled" as its going to get.

This was how the table was set up for yesterday's post. We got it centered with the light fixture and door to the kitchen. What's harder to tell is that it is a very cramped fit between the table and the hutch. We're talking a, suck it in to get on by, sort of squeeze.

And now a shot of the table flipped the other way, more centered with the hutch. From this shot it still looks like the table is centered with the light, but it's not. Something about this positioning works better, but closer up the room still feels cramped over by the hutch and very empty along the back wall area.

A closer view of the new layout. It was suggested we move the hutch along the back wall, so I'll give that a go in a few days. And then create a gallery wall of art around the hutch.

This sums up by biggest hitch. The mismatched wood tones. You see it best in the photo above.

So now that you see the entire space, any new thoughts? Do you prefer the table placement in photo #1 or photo #2. It's worth noting that the current rug under the table wont be staying there. We just needed a place to throw it down when we moved in.

Thanks! ...oh and in case you live in San Diego and very much need this table in your life, we did throw it up on Craigslist with a, make me sell, sort of price. Things that we can get now that we have closets, a yard and an actual dining room.

Yesterday I brought home a dining table and 4 chairs. In someone else's house I loved them so much that my first instinct was to lick them to claim them as mine forever and ever. However, in my house I'm having a problem making them fit.

Look past the awkwardly placed rug and piles of artwork waiting to be hung. It really is a gorgeous set but doesn't quite go with our hutch or at least the current placement of our hutch. For one the hutch is a much more substantial piece and the wood is blonder. When the table is centered under the light there is not much room between the table and the hutch.

The table has leaves that slide out or under. We could leave it square but I think it does nothing for the room or table to leave it all closed up.
I love the shape of the chairs. Since the current covers are not original and the foam is nice but a bit thick I've already started the process to remove and recover. There are no marking on the table or the chairs except for written on the underside of the table "IMP-51" A Mid Century group on Facebook threw out the name Koefoeds Hornslet and these chairs are a close match, just not marked and the wood looks to be oak, not teak or rosewood.

So my question is...Does the table work in this room? Do I keep the table and chairs and try to rehome the hutch. Or do I sell the set and look for one better suited for this space?

*UPDATE* new post HERE with pictures of the entire room and the table flipped around.
Lots of collections that I don't really know what to do with.

Behold the massive stockpile of 1970s and 1980s matchbox cars, hot wheels and the like. A few of the highlights include the Greyhound Bus and the Hess Bus (located on top of the large truck) These are all a bit worse for the wear and I think I will keep these for the boy when he gets a bit older.

Below are two rugs I picked up. I was told they were vintage Navajo rugs, but you've got me. I am not a rug dealer, expert or up to snuff on Native American textiles. I just liked them, and well sometimes you've got to go with your gut, even if it costs you, right? If any of you kind folks have a hunch of your own, please let me know. *Update* I don't think either of the rugs are Navajo now. I did some further research, and Navajo rug almost never have fringe at the end like the red one does. The longer rug appears to be of great quality, but I can't find any Navajo rugs that share the same design or symbols.

At the same sale, the basket pictured below is supposed to be a navajo basket - again, I have no idea. To the far right is the most amazing souvenir drum from the Petrified Forest National Park. This I'll be keeping for the boy and I have some guilt about this because it feels more fragile than a "toy"should and he'll probably end up ruining it.

Right before I dropped and broke my camera I was able to snap a shot of the most cheerful orange bowls made by Knobler and an old set of salt and pepper shakers from the Bali Hai restaurant.

I hope to be back to post a few more shots of some of the other collections I found, including 40 or so small old glass jars and a set of science posters produced by Chevron Chemical Company (part of Chevron Gas).

These are the items I found this week.

First, this amazing 1930s globe. I scored this 9 inch Cram Terrestrial globe at a thrift store which is in walking distance of the new house. I'll be keeping this beauty for now to add to my own personal collection.

Add caption

I paid $100.00 for the Midwinter Stonehenge Sun Dish set below- and I'm ok with that because we plan on keeping most of it for our own personal dishes. After setting aside a few of the cracked pieces the set came with 20 large dinner plates and the rest is a service for 8-10. It includes dinner plates, salad plates, bread plates, soup bowls, cereal bowls, mugs, saucers, plates for the soup bowls, a large serving platter, a covered casserole dish, a creamer and sugar bowl and 6 small shot glasses or sake cups. I'm hoping to sell about half of the dinner plates to help cover the cost of the set - wouldn't that be nice.
Long gone are the days of bragging how we've fit our family of 4 into a 600 square foot home. We are now the proud owners of a much larger, family friendly space - A home with more square feet, more closets and more yard.

Don't get me wrong, I loved that house. I will always love that house. It's where me and my husband first lived together, it's where I was proposed to. We adopted our first pet, got married and had our beautiful boy while living in that house. It was amazing- I mean, just look at those windows!!

For all the items the old house lacked for our growing family, the new one hits almost every mark.

Closets, lots and lots of closets (we had shared 1 closet for the 3 of us)

A yard so big, Daisy has a section we refer to as her dog park

3 bed/2 bath...yes you can now come visit AND stay with us.

a garage that can easily handle the "shop"

Safe, quiet streets (aside from the much better schools, this was the number 1 reason for the move)

Our new home was built in 1957 and we purchased it from the original owners who took excellent care of their house. We've got many of the original features still intact (some good, some bad)

That's what I have been up to for the past few months. If you ever want to test the strength of your marriage (we survived!) sell, buy and pack up a house, with a newborn. I received a few tips to check out the Keer Glass Foundry (Thank you!) I couldn't find much on their website that matched up to what I had, so I shot over a quick email asking for more information.

Their reply:
"These are in fact Keer glass bowls from circa 1990. At that time the company was called Keer Design. We had products for only a short period and then focused on custom fabrication projects. As it turns out we are planning to develop a line of residential lighting and we are thinking of using the bowl shape in the pictures you sent for lighting. So please keep an eye out for our new products."

And if your still feeling a little sleuthy, care to help me identify this beauty. She stand about 9 inches tall, the glass is thick and heavy and it sits on 3 feet. It's easy to think this might be a vase, but the opening is so small...you wouldn't be able to fit much. Any ideas?
We had family in town last weekend and while out having a little San Diego touristy fun we passed a sign for an estate sale. With an extra pair of hands on deck it seemed like a good opportunity to try the treasure hunting game, now with baby.

Success! This was the perfect storm of a great sale. Few signs. Not posted on Craigslist or estatesales.net. Family members that just wanted to get rid of everything. And a cute baby to help soften the deals :) We showed up around 2:00 PM on a Saturday, and these are just a few of the items we left with.

I love these Mid Century candlesticks. They will soon end up in the shop.

I am obsessed with this small but very heavy cast iron owl. I can't find any sort of signature or makers mark so I'm looking for a bit more information and then it will find it's way to the store.
The shop has taken a back burner for quite a while BUT we had family in town last weekend, and they begged us to do a little treasure hunting. We did and it was awesome to get back out there. I was able to pick up a lot of fun items and hope to start listing (and selling!) again, albeit it at a much slower rate. :)Nells Vintage Househttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02073157347851220520noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-768281232587425429.post-31965547670766617222012-07-23T09:32:00.003-07:002012-07-23T09:33:56.869-07:00Happy Anniversary

We are already sitting on too much inventory that I'm waiting to list once we get back, so I really shouldn't have gone out today. But I did, and brought home a few treasures to add to the queue. These are the things I found.

I love this Blendo Glass set. I spent more than I should, but man oh man if that orange isn't fantastic!
One of the better aspects of getting up at an early hour on the weekends is that my husband is gleefully right by my side, ready to go. He loves searching out the vinyl at sales while I'm scouring for what I look for, and he usually comes home with a few gems. These records are his, but that fantastic mid-century LP rack is all mine.
This was my favorite favorite favorite find of today. It is a Mexican Folk Art Tree of Life. Look closely and you will see Eve tempting Adam with an apple and the snake wrapping itself around the tree. It is so bright and colorful and I am going to work overtime to find it a home in my house- much to the dismay of my husband.
A beautifully crewel embroidered tablecloth. The stitching on it is flawless, but there are a few minor age stains I'll need to work on and try to lift out. Any suggestions on spot stain removal for old linens?
(wood Wakefield)And the other things I found (July 14th edition)

I might have mentioned something in my last post along the lines of bring home less...I also might have forgotten that I had mentioned that. Summer sales are in full swing and the plethora of sales means less competition to find that hidden treasure. The sale I had the best luck at I arrived 2 hours after the posted start time!

This particular one peaked my interest because it was that of a retired electrician. I was hoping to restock my supply of wood and metal boxes- and I did.

A few other surprises were waiting for me after I piled up all my boxes. My husband and I kept walking over to this table. He really loved it and I was on the fence, not sure about the mass appeal of ducks. The owner came by and told me about how, as a child he remembered helping his parents make the table in the 50s and his job was to smash all the tiles. Sold. Sometimes it just takes those little personal details to make a good item feel extra special.

Next to the table was a folded up wood chair- I loved the age and character is had, but need another chair like I need a hole in my head. Old habits die hard, so I gave the chair a quick flip and that's when I saw the tag on the back.

Heywood Wakefield folding chair- tag reads C5 795 - Walnut

Truth be told this Heywood Wakefield folding chair has seen better days, but for $3.00 I couldn't leave it behind. I have not spent too much time looking up the origins, I'd love to hear your opinions if you have them.

But wait- that's not all. I also picked up a ton of smalls. I might have screamed "STOP THE CAR!" when I saw the globe at a yard sale we were driving right by. It's made of metal- I do not apologize.

I am trying trying trying to go for quality over quantity moving forward. That sounds simple enough but is hard for me, as I tend to grab large piles to get large discounts. These are the things I brought home.

Yesterday, I posted about a community sale we were participating in 40 minutes from home and while we sold some stuff, we still managed to come home with 2 carloads of items. Our own items. :(

Below is a picture of Eric in our space. The sun was in a really bad spot by the time I got my camera out so I'm sorry it looks so dark- but you get the idea.

Still early on in the morning. We weren't standing so proud by the end of the day.

My initial thoughts on the day...
The Good
*As we were setting up a nice old man came by and bought a handful of items. His sale covered our "participation" fee.

*There was a restaurant next door and they had really good burgers

*We also made enough money to cover the cost of the burgers

The Bad
* It was hot out. Not as hot as some of you East Coasters are dealing with, but 6 hours in a parking lot with no pop-up tent made for one over heated seller.

*Descanso is faaaaar! And apparently not just for me...also for all of the buyers.

*Someone asked me if I would accept a check for $2.00, from Wyoming. sorry lady, no can do.

The Ugly
*The parking lot was not paved, just lots of loose dirt and gravel and every time a car drove by it kicked up a little tornado of dust and dirt. we were covered in a thick layer of grime within 20 minutes of being there.

*2 carloads of items left home with us and 2 carloads of items came home with us.

The lower parking lot- where we were stationed

Overall I'm glad we participated today. We did get rid of a few box loads and learned some good tips for the next time we do something like this. 1. shade is important. 2. we need better tables...more things need to be lifted off the ground. 3. keep the books in boxes. 4. cheap clothing racks stink!

Hopefully it is the dance I am doing tomorrow at oh say 2:01 PM. Somehow (actually I know how) we have ended up with way too much "stuff." At different times I thought my Etsy shop was going in a different direction, so that's what I bought for, but now I've finally got a grasp on what I want to see and it does not include vintage clothing, books, buttons, jewelry, large bulky items or silver-plate flatware.

I signed up for a community flea market held in an antique mall parking lot about 30 miles away and tomorrow is the day of reckoning. Honestly I have no idea what to expect, I am hoping (and pricing for 1 step above garage sale, 1 step below flea market/swap meet.) What I do know is that the hubs and I have to drive in separate cars because we have so much stuff, and even then I'm not certain how it is all going to fit, or how we are going to fit it all into our 10x10 space.

If you happen to be East of East County San Diego tomorrow (Saturday June 30th), stop by and say hello. We will be the husband and wife duo sweating it out- because we don't have a pop-up tent.
