Thrift Store Gripes

Just popping in to air some grievances.

Salvation Army:
$2.50 for a children's book!?
$3.99 for a small milk glass bud vase!?
$24.99 for 1 brass horse head bookend!?

AmVets:
Why must you use black sharpie to price your items, directly on the items.   WHY????

Random mega church thrift store:
Printing out what an items is listed for on Ebay, then offering your item for 25% less does not improve your chances of me purchasing that item.

Random family run thrift store not associated with any charity:
Looking up individual record albums on Ebay as a pricing guide, at the cash register, during check out makes my head actually want to spin off.

In spite of all the above I had some decent finds this week...I'll be back tomorrow to share my loot.

  1. Oh I can relate....one of my local op shops used to have reasonable prices, & have now jacked them up by 5 to 10 times what they used to be. Suffice to say I won't be buying much from them anymore. And the old Ebay print out thing drives me nuts too. One op shop was justifying $200 on a average round kitchen clock, claiming that's what it's worth on Ebay. I wouldn't even pay $20 for it!

    1. One of my biggest gripes is when people say..."well I saw this listed on ebay for..." I can throw up a coffee cup and list it for $200.00, doesn't mean it's going to sell. ;)

Not to mention Ebay has a viewing audience of potentially millions....your little shop, maybe a few hundred.

  2. It's happening here as well. Over the last 3 years or so prices have skyrocketed, and you can frequently find the same items on sale new for less than they charge at the thrift shops. Most of it is junk too, as the good stuff is being picked out and sold auction style. I used to go to like 10 - 15 thrifts a week. Now, I probably visit one or two a month and only if I happen to be driving by on the way to something else. They just got too greedy.

    1. Yes!! I actually saw a few thrift store price tags over the original price tag and the thrift store ones were higher. It's maddening.

    1. I hadn't been to a salvation army in months...but I saw an awesome dresser pop up on someones instagram feed that she had "scored" at our local SA...now I'm guessing she prob. paid close to retail for it.

  4. My favorite thing in the world is to ignore the items with obscene prices on the racks and pick out the gems that the thrift store employees don't know about. Just today, I picked up three pairs of shoes from a certain "barefoot shoe" company that were priced ridiculously low, undoubtedly because the sorter did not know what he/she was looking at. Yes please!
